GENERAL DISCIPLINE AND CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

The following guidelines will help the students to behave in a courteous mannerand to maintain general discipline in the college premises.

  1.  Our students are expected to be polite and courteous, respect and greet fellow-students' parents/guardians, seniors, teaching and non-teaching staff and authorities both inside and outside the campus.

  2.  The uniqueness of St Mary's college is the spirit of family. This is to be ensured by the cordiality in relationship between and among students and staff members, harmoniously living and respect for members of other communities and religion, not taking part in divisive activities, which go counter to the spirit of harmonious living.

  3.  Students should be disciplined, proactive in promoting and working towards making college a positive, supportive, safe and welcoming place for all students and teachers.

  4.  All students must wear college uniform.

  5. The medium of communication must be English within the campus.

  6.  Every morning we begin our day with a prayer song at 9.30am and ends up with the National Anthem at 3.30pm.

  7.  The students should join the prayer standing until its ends.

  10.  The students have to be inside the classroom before the second bell (9.15am)

  11.  Students shall rise from their seats when teacher enters and shall take seats only after he/she has taken his/her seat or directs them to sit.

  12.  Student shall not enter in between or leave a class without the permission of the teacher in the respective classes.

  13.  Students shall enter faculty rooms only with permission.

  14.  Students shall not loiter through corridors, verandahs and canteen or sit on the steps of porticos and staircases during class hours.

  15.  Students are strictly directed to spend their leisure time in the library or reading room.

  16.  Students have to foster personal, academic and professional integrity.Integrity calls for being honest in examinations and assignments, avoidingplagiarism and misinterpretation of facts and not using internet to gain access to unauthorized information or objectionable websites.

  17.  Students should make every reasonable effort to participate actively in the activities of the college.

  18.  Associations: All the students of the College should become a member of one or more of the Association(s), which provide opportunities for developing co-curricular and extra- curricular talents. The Principal, the Exofficio President of each Association, nominates a teacher as the VicePresident for each Association. The details of various associations and staff in-charge may be found in the handbook. Students are advised to contact the respective staff in-charge to enroll under these activities or associations.

  19.  No one will be allowed to whistle, howl, shout or sing aloud in the Classroom or Auditorium.

  20.  Strict silence shall be observed while moving about in the campus.

  21.  During official meetings held in the college strict discipline must be maintained.

  22. Irregular attendance, insubordination to teachers, habitual inattention to class work, indifference to studies, obscenity in word or act are sufficient reasons for the permanent or temporary dismissal of a student.

  23.  In the event of continued poor performance in the internal test, poor class attendance by any student, the principal has the authority to withhold the permission for him/her to write for the University Examination.

  24.  Promotion to higher class, selection for the university examination and issue of progress, attendance or conduct certificates are matters absolutely within the discretion of the principal.

  25.  In the case of violation of the rules and regulations of the college the Principal shall have power to inflict punishment such as fine, denial of attendance, suspension, withholding of term certificates, forfeiture of educational concession and scholarships, compulsory issue of TC or any action he deems fit and proper to any student according to his discretion.

  26.  Students are advised to consult their respective class teachers on matters including their personal problems in the campus.

  27.  Grievance or complaint of any kind can be put into the grievance box. A Grievance Redressal Cell also functions in the college.

  28.  Indecent behavior towards the opposite sex will not be tolerated

  29.  properties including library books, lab equipments, sound system, sporting goods, electric fittings, and furniture of the college are to be handled with extreme care. Lights and fans in the classroom must be switched off when not in use and water should be consumed adequately.

  30.  Students should keep the campus and the classroom clean and tidy. They should abstain from sticking bills, writing, engraving and disfiguring the walls, pillars, toilets, black/white boards, furniture, doors, windows and any property owned by the college. Damages caused to them will have to be adequately compensated, failing disciplinary action will be taken with the principal's discretion.

  31.  Students are expected to be eager and ready to assist the teachers or other staff in keeping our environment healthy and beautiful. They shall refrain from littering and make use of dustbins keeping the college premises clean.They shall help the domestic staff to maintain toilets clean and pristine.

  32.  Students should take note of the notification put on the notice board everyday before they leave the college. Failure to look at the notice board will not be an excuse for any admission or commission.

  33.  Students who go over to other college or institutions and engage in acts of indiscipline such as demonstration or strikes will be punished.

  34.  Students are strictly banned from indulging in Anti-National, Anti-Social,Communal and Political Activities in the campus. Any forms of Religious Fanaticism and Profanity under any circumstances will not be tolerated; it will be subjected to stringent punitive measures

  35.  Unofficial meetings and fund collections, organizing, attending or participating in any activity or agitations, strikes, dharnas sponsored by student organizations of political parties are strictly prohibited.

  36.  Student shall paste any material on the Notice Board or circulate notices,pamphlets, leaflets, posters and display banners, flags, flex boards anywherein the campus without the written permission of the Principal.

  37.  Students are not allowed to make mass petitions to the Principal or staff. A team of not more than three can represent any complaints.

  38.  The campus is under CCTV surveillance.

  39.  No function in the college shall be arranged by the student without the prior permission of the Principal, HOD and the respective class teacher.

  40.  Access to the college buildings after normal academic hours is permitted only with the permission of the principal.

  41.  Students shall not invite or encourage outsiders to enter the campus.

  42.  No student shall enter into any contract in the name of the college except with prior written authorization from the college officials vested with the authority to sign a contract on behalf of the college.

  43.  Study tours/batch picnics are organized as part of the academic program and hence, it is mandatory for students to go. If there is a grave reason exemption should be obtained from the Principal.

  44.  The study tour application and schedule, recommended by the class teacherand the faculty in charge, should be submitted to the principal well in advance for approval by the principal. A male and female faculty should accompany the students for the tour. Consumption of alcohol and smoking or any intoxicants are strictly prohibited during the tour and any violation in this regard will have stringent punitive measures. Students while enjoying their trip should also maintain the required decorum and avoid anything that will tarnish the image of the college.

  45.  Students should not resort to any unlawful activity that will disrupt the peaceful academic atmosphere within the campus. Severe action will be taken against those who indulge in such unlawful activities.

  46.  Students are not allowed to exchange gifts of any sort like greeting cards,photographs, gift articles or letter with the students of the opposite sex.

  47.  Healthy inclusive relationship without exclusiveness shall reign in the campus. A relationship detrimental to the academic performance of a student or a relationship that is objectionable tarnishing the image of the college should be reported to the principal and concerned parents.

  48.  No student shall send any information concerning the college for publication either to the press or elsewhere without prior approval of the Principal of the college, nor shall he/she approach the any other authorities except through the college Principal. Any breach of this rule may lead to outright expulsion of the student.

  49.  The authority of the principal extends outside the campus also. Under the Government's Educational Rules, the Principal has absolute right to penalize, suspend, or dismiss any student found guilty or gross misconduct inside or outside the college campus if it is likely to reflect badly upon the reputation of the college.

  50.  While every effort will be made to keep the parents or guardians informed about any instance of serious misconduct on the part of their children, the principal does not guarantee that he will intimate in advance to the parents or guardians any action which he may decide to make against the students in the interest of the discipline in the college.
