1.Spell Bee and Quiz Competition

Inter departmental literary quiz and spell bee competition was conducted. Aksa from department of English and Minha from department of Physics bagged first and second prize respectively in spell bee.

2.Fresher’s Day

A welcome party was given for the new joiners of both graduate and post graduate programmes. Programmes were blessed with the presence of college principal and vice principal. Tiny tasks were given for the students just to break their insecurities of joining a college if they have any. The programmes were successfully completed with the support of teachers and students. The senior students also came up with their performances.

3. Students Tour

Annual tour is conducted every year for the both UG and PG final year students.The destination of the tour was Chikamangalore and Coorg. There were 30 students and were accompanied by Mr.Nipin Kurian, Mr. Sameer T, Mr. Jayaharilal, Ms. Soubhagya Suresh and Ms. Shibila, Faculty representatives. It was a three days journey. As always, this year’s tour was also successfully completed providing the students with some beautiful memories of their college life.

4.A visit to BLF

The final year students were given a chance to visit BLF which is held yearly on Calicut beach. The students were accompanied by MrSalmanul Faris and MsSoubhagya Suresh, department faculty. Students were enlightened by various speeches by eminent personalities like Joseph Annamkutty Jose, and other exhibitions.

5. Farewell Party

A last chance to cherish all their sweet memories, to bid a good bye, farewell parties are given to the final year UG and PG students by their respective juniors. Every year department appreciates this practice of the students to celebrate their last moments beautifully.

1.A Tribute to Karnad

The programmes of the department for this year were begun with commemorating the demise of the legendary Indian playwright Girish Karnad. On 25/06/2019, in college auditorium, all the students and teachers of the department witnessed the beautiful presentation of Nagamandala, a play by Girish Karnad. 10 students of the department performed with the aid of music. The official function was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Jose Mathew Parayil, respected principal of the college and presided by department HOD, Prof. P.P John. The musical drama directed by MsKeerthy was well received by both the teachers and the students and it also gained recognition from all the other departments

2.Seminar on Post Modern Fiction

A one day session was given for the PG students on “Post Modern Fiction” on 26/08/2019. The session was headed by Mr Fazal Rahman (writer and editor) who being a master in fiction was able to open up new arenas in fiction for the students. The programme was inaugurated by Fr Jose Mathew Parayil, college principal and was presided over by Prof P.P John, Head of the Department of English.

There were 30 students and were accompanied by Mr.Nipin Kurian, Mr. Sameer T, Mr. Jayaharilal, Ms. Soubhagya Suresh and Ms. Elizabeth James, Faculty representatives. It was a three days journey which returned on 08/01/2020. As always, this year’s tour was also successfully completed providing the students with some beautiful memories of their college life.

1.ART OF MYTHOPIA BETWEEN THE CREDULOUS AND THE CREDIBLE

The first seminar (perhaps a webinar) for this academic year was conducted on August 27 2020 on the topic of Mythopia. A topic which was not that much talked off was a novel term for most of the students. The resource person Mr P Abdul Hameed, (vice principal and counselor Silver

Mount International School Perinthalmanna) was a rich cradle of the concerned topic. The one and a half year that he spent with the students was highly informative. Since the focus was on the final year UG and PG students, the talk hopefully opened them new arrays for their final year research work. Buoyantly this helped the students to deviate from the classic cliché topics which is tired of overdo. The session began with the welcome speech of our HOD Prof. PP John was inaugurated by Rev. Fr Denny Cholappil, head of our institution. A novel topic being presented in a novel mode was in overall a good experience for the students.

2. LA LUMIERE

In this Holocene epoch, people are highly career oriented, without just sticking on to their academics students are trying to secure a good future for them. In such a scenario it is the responsibility of the concerned institutions to provide them with a good guide about pursuing a good vocation. Thus English department in association with IQAC has organized a career guidance programme for the college leaving UG and PG batches.

This being the first offline session for this year was held at the college seminar hall on 19th January 2021 at 1 PM. Mr Ibrahim Kuppooth, senior research fellow at Jamila Milia Islamia New Delhi, was the resource person. Being a youngster he was able to understand the concerns of the students and he effortlessly managed the session. Rev. Fr Denny, college Principal inaugurated the programme. The talk which was followed by an interactive session was a great success as students were introduced into the new prospects for tailing a career.

3. INSIGHT

Learning English literature is not always about reading a lot of fictional materials; it offers a lot of other thing too which any other streams of education cannot promise. On among such assurances is film, films are already a part of literature curriculum. At the same time film adaptations of many legendary works are also presented to the students to enrich their critical view.

English department occasionally conducts film festivals both syllabi ones and sometimes movies outside the curriculum too. On 17th February 2021 one such film festival was channeled on our college seminar hall where the films “On Body and Soul” and “Golden Tree” were screened for the students. A full day programme organized in association with IQAC was followed by a chat session by the student where they presented their observations about these two films.

4.ONAM CELEBRATION

Though the pandemic has posed a lot of challenges, the strong determination of the people can win any dares. The best example for this being our onam celebrations, we never had an onam without flower carpet, sadya, and all this time when we are having a lot of restrictions the college came up with a new idea to celebrate the festival via online on 27 August.

Students had batch wise celebrations where the teachers managed to reach all the classes in the limited time. The sweet memories of the past were recollected at the same time being in such a platform students enjoyed this new mode of celebration. Competitions were arranged for the students, and they all participated in it with full spirit.

5. CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

As they celebrated the arrival of Mahabali stunningly, the coming of Santa Clause was too celebrated charmingly on Google Meet. The final years who already made a good friendship with the first years teamed up together to celebrate Christmas.

And the sophomores had a separate celebration. Like all the other virtual celebration this one too was a great success though the students missed the essence of the past year celebrations.

6. SOFT SKILL DEVELOPMENT

In this era of globalization it’s hard to secure a good career without having good communication skills in English. Aiming the post graduate commerce students English department hosted a 30 hours crash course on “Communication skills” which is handles by Mr Sajeev which is getting good encouragement from the recipient

7.WEBINAR ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Having an English degree is not just reading plays and poems or speaking the language like a pro. It has many more to do there are a lot of struggles included among one being the research project that has to be carried out for the successful completion of UG and PG degrees. This being a herculean task for the students, department has taken an initiative to ease the students by providing them adequate information regarding this research project. Though now for them it’s just a requirement for their degree this will going to help them while they are pursuing higher education. The session headed by Dr AK Shahina Mol, Assistant Professor, KAHM Women’s College Manjeri, was an eye opener for the students which touched all the areas that to be covered when attempting to do a project. Starting with topic selection she talked about all the steps required in a research including setting up the title. Inaugurated by Rev. Fr Denny Cholappillil, Principal of our college, blessed with the presence our beloved HOD Prof. P P John, this new venture of the department, was made a success by the active participation of final year UG and PG students.

8.FRESHER’S DAY

A group of students, who hasn’t seen either their college or their teachers, were getting introduced to new subjects and patterns. Every year the new batches are given a decent welcome party where they are offered chances to get rid of their qualms and uncertainties of joining a new college which always came up with good results. This year being in the limitations the final year students gave a welcome party for their juniors on 29 December via Google Meet. They were given minor tasks as ice breaking activity. Without causing them much trouble the outcome of the programme was satisfactory.

9.PG WELCOME PARTY

The senior PG batch piloted a welcome bash for their juniors on -------. After having a lot of merriments online they students made use of the covid relaxations to throw their party. The gathering held at college seminar hall was an immense triumph since they were having all these non-virtual jamborees after quite a long time. The Johnny-come-latelies were given minute yet striking tasks.

10.CHEERIO FOR THE SENIORS

A farewell party was thrown for the final UG students on 29 march at college seminar hall. The programme hosted by the sophomores of English department was more of a final chance for the final years to make some memories before they leave the college. Being a batch who missed almost all the precious days of a college life this certainly was a memorable moment for them. Rev. Fr Denny Cholappillil, college principal inaugurated the function after which all the students and teachers shared the memories of three years that they spent together in the college.

11.ECECRIRE POESIE

As a part of world poetry day on March 21, the department steered an inter-departmental poetry competition on 18th March 2021 at college at the old library hall. The event which was a platform for the students to nurture their poetic abilities and to enhance their imaginations was well received by the students. Like the previous years department has come up with attractive certificate courses. There are two programmes aimed at UG and PG students respectively. A course for UG students focusing on basic grammar skills is handled by Ms Adithya and Mr Abhinav is running smoothly and is getting good responses from the beneficiaries. The second one offering a good platform for the PG students on Modernism and its theories, handled by MrUdayan, MrNipin and MrJayaharilal, is also getting positive responses from the students.
